I'm not exactly known for my strong people management skills - I get annoyed easily and tend to expect people to be smarter than they generally are... and also I'm insensitive... ;-)
(petty, bad with people... I'm Rodney! Noooo!)

But I hired three people today, got rid of two ineffective people this month, promoted one deserving employee and now I get to give people *more* money? Based on merit? I like this whole "being the boss" thing sometimes. I like being able to reward good work.

So, for those of you who don't know, it's been a rough 6 weeks. I lost Daisy kind of unexpectedly right after coming back from DragonCon. As soon as we got back and collected her from the vet/boarding we were hit by TS Hanna and Daisy developed a ugly horrid swollen eye. On Saturday she was in surgery and her eye was removed but they found bone cancer all through her head. A few days later I had to put her to sleep. She was my companion for 11 years and.. well, it really kinda sucked. And then this week my parents had to put their dog down, Miss Maddie Sue. And my ex e-mailed to tell me that our cat Eberts went missing last week (and since there are coyotes and other predators in the area and he's microchipped and he's heard nothing we can only assume he's dead.) Poor Eberts was only 5. Just a bad few weeks for out furry companions, I guess.

In slightly more upbeat news, I have an in-person interview at Savannah College of Art and Design (Atlanta campus) next week for the Library Director position. It's on Halloween... should I dress up?

I went to a workshop on computing solutions for the broke library and they briefly touched on drupal but I didn't come away with much more than I already knew. Does anyone in flist-land have any insightful comments on drupal/use drupal? Just curious.

This weather - ugh. I wanted to start felting a laptop bag but it's too hot to contemplate holding yarn. So, like a dolt, I baked instead. I made vegan linzer cookies with pomegranate jelly. Yum.
Now I think I'll turn off the heat generating laptop and go sit in front of the fan.
Hope everyone else is staying cool and out of the path of tropical storms and whatnot.

Well, the phone interview went well and they asked if I would be interested in an in-person interview. I refrained from saying, "Duh!"

We'll see what happens. If it happens, it'll happen fast as they want someone in place by 9/15 at the latest. So... fingers crossed and stuff.

Also, Dragon Con is in what? 5 weeks?

I got a call from Savannah College of Art and Design yesterday. They want to do a phone interview on Wednesday - I'm insanely excited about this. I do like my job right now but I think that SCAD would allow me to really focus my talents better. Also, it would be close enough to the family to go visit without taking out a mortgage to buy gas...
p.s. Comic-Con is awesome! Saw Summer Glau and Seth Green in the Marriott today up close and personal. Both were lovely and very sweet to the fans.

Off to San Diego in the morning on an OhGod30 flight. Flights before 6 am should be illegal. Although I suspect my red eye coming back on Sunday night/Monday morning will be awesome, too. Nothing like flying into town, getting into your car and heading to work. Woot!

Still working the Navy angles to try to get aboard the Midway for the Continuum thing. We'll see if anyone makes with the favors.

Bill Pardue from Arlington Heights Memorial Library in Illinois is promoting the idea that as many librarians as possible log on to Yahoo! Answers, the Wikipedia Reference Desk and other Q+A sites on September 10, 2007, and show and tell the world what great reference service libraries provide.
